Fishery Technician III

Fish Technicians collect biological data and samples from fish passing the Bonneville Dam. Specifically, we investigate the length, age and stock composition of salmon. During the field season, typically April to October, the crew departs CRITFC’s Portland office each morning at 7:30 am and typically returns at 2:30 pm.

Our work is in support CRITFC’s fish restoration plan, Wy-Kan-Ush-Mi Wa-Kish-Wit “Spirit of the Salmon”. The aim of this work is to ensure that the four CRITFC member tribes (Nez Perce, Umatilla, Warm Springs, and Yakama) have a sustainable salmon fishery.

Position Details

  • Classification: Regular, Full time, Nonexempt
  • Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week
  • Pay: $44,013 to $46,946/year
  • Department: Fishery Science
  • Location: Portland, OR
  • Start Date: Approximately Monday, April 3, 2023

Responsibilities

  • Capture, identify and release fish
  • Collect biological data such as length and age
  • Collect scale samples used for genetic research
  • Take detailed sampling notes and input data manually
  • Closely follow protocols for handling fish and managing data
  • Assist with writing scientific reports

Qualifications

  • Four years’ experience in environmental or fishery science. A Bachelor’s degree in fisheries or a related field can substitute for work experience.
  • Familiarity with biological research and collecting data.
  • Strong attention to detail. Science work is detailed work.
  • A desire to follow protocols carefully.
  • Ability to set personal routines so that data is always collected carefully and handled in precisely the same manner, so as to avoid data errors.
  • A strong orientation to safety. The ability to recognize safety risks and exercise good judgement to keep yourself and others safe.
  • Strong team skills and a willingness to pitch in and get the work done as a team.
  • Enrolled membership in a tribal organization or a strong desire to be of service to a tribal organization. Knowledge of or dedication to learn tribal history and customs of CRITFC’s four member tribes.
  • Must be a reliable and on time person, as our crew works together as a team and we commute to Bonneville Dam together each day.
  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds independently or 50 pounds as a two-person lift.
  • This job frequently requires driving a CRITFC vehicle or your own vehicle for business (mileage compensated), and therefore you must be able to meet the terms of the CRITFC Motor Vehicle policy. Per the policy, applicants are required to have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record for the past three years. This includes a three-year record clear of the following:
    • Reckless Driving
    • Driving Under the Influence
    • Suspension or revoked license
    • No more than two at-fault accidents
    • No more than one major violation or two minor violations.

Supervision

This role reports to John Whiteaker, Fisheries Scientist.


Working Conditions

Work is performed outdoors and indoors in a field setting and is moderately physically demanding. Some heavy lifting is required. Outdoor conditions may be hot or cold, and the work is often wet. CRITFC provides protective safety gear for all weather conditions. Occasionally, extra work hours may be required in order to complete the team’s work for the day.

This job frequently requires driving a CRITFC vehicle or your own vehicle for business (mileage compensated), and therefore you must be able to meet the terms of the CRITFC Motor Vehicle policy. Per the policy, applicants are required to have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record for the past three years. This includes a three-year record clear of the following:

  • Reckless Driving
  • Driving Under the Influence
  • Suspension or revoked license
  • No more than two at-fault accidents
  • One major violation or two minor violations.
