Maintenance Worker

The position provides the maintenance of the 31 Tribal In-Lieu and Treaty Fishing Access Sites located along 150 miles of the Columbia River. The FSMD crews perform work that involves a variety of trade practices to maintain, repair, and improve existing public facilities. Skills include painting, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, electrical, custodial work, and maintaining sanitation standards in all facilities. Maintenance workers use hand and power tools to accomplish the work.

Essential Job Functions

  • Preventative and corrective maintenance and minor building repairs to the various improvements. Maintenance and repair of boat ramps and paved areas at the sites or at other public facilities within the jurisdiction of the In-Lieu and Treaty Fishing Access Sites.
  • Major upkeep of facilities includes removing, cleaning, replacing, packing and sealing any defective parts of utility facilities, water, and irrigation systems. Crews regularly clean and sanitize related fixtures, tables, shelters, fireplaces, and fish cleaning stations. Workers are expected to select and safely operate the appropriate tools for each task, determine the best materials, and problem-solve methods and techniques to meet public safety standards.
  • Crew will perform visual inspection of sites and amenities to ensure they are in good working condition. Unacceptable conditions need to be reported and repairs due to vandalism are planned and executed. Crews provide winterizing procedures to protect the facilities through the winter or when closed.
  • Cleaning restrooms and vault toilets includes: sweeping and mopping; general cleaning and sanitation of fixtures, toilets, sinks, benches, and showers; cleaning windows, mirrors, and light fixtures; restocking toilet paper as needed; and collecting and disposing of trash, litter and debris. Crews maintain a stock of janitorial supplies and advises the Maintenance Supervisor when inventories need replenishing.
  • Completes seasonal lawn maintenance tasks: fertilizing, preparing seedbeds, transplanting, seeding, aerating, pruning, trimming, and applying chemicals to plants according to directions. Crews cut, trim, and remove fallen trees and brush. All improved and unimproved areas are mowed regularly with power mowers, including riding mowers. Crew members are responsible to keep mowers and other power equipment serviced including minor repairs and normal operator maintenance. Vegetation control is applied on gravel-surfaced areas, pathways, roads, parking areas, and campsites. The irrigation system is used as needed.
  • Crew monitor sites for safety hazards, reports emergency situations, the abuse of safety, protection policies, and the rules governing the sites to the Maintenance Supervisor. The crews perform operation and maintenance of boats and motor vehicles used for inspections, trash removal, and to transport supplies and equipment.
  • Following the completion of training individual workers will assist with the operation, maintenance and recording use of Public Water Systems on the sites as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements/Qualifications

  • Applicant must have ability to do maintenance work with normal supervision.
  • Applicant must be able to understand, and use written and/or oral instructions.\
  • Must be able to communicate and interpret instructions, specifications, work orders, and blueprints.\
  • Must have the ability to safely operate vehicles, power equipment, and hand tools.
  • Knowledge and skills to perform preventative maintenance to tools, vehicles, and equipment is required.
  • In order to become a full trained Public Water System Operator, the applicant must have a HS diploma or have completed a GED.
  • Three years minimum maintenance or construction experience required.
  • Must possess a current valid state-issued drivers license and a good driving record.
  • Be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 prior to the first day of employment.


  • Supervision Received: Supervised by Maintenance Supervisor and/or Senior Maintenance Worker.
  • Supervision Given: This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Working Conditions

This position is located in The Dalles, Oregon. Duties require that maintenance workers travel up and down the Columbia River. The duty days and hours must be flexible enough to meet the peak use times dictated by the treaty fishing seasons and occasional overtime or weekend work may be required. Normal duty days and hours during the COVID-19 are 7:00 am – 5:30 pm, four-days a week, either Monday-Thursday or Tuesday-Friday.

Applicant must be available to work full time plus occasional overtime during the treaty fishing season and or when emergency non-routine maintenance repairs are required.

The maintenance worker must be able to safely lift 75 lbs. (tools, equipment and supplies, i.e. bags of fertilizer or grass seed, and trees / shrubs) and must be physically mobile in an unimproved riverbank setting.

The driver operating a CRITFC vehicle or their own private vehicle for business related purposes shall be in possession of a valid, unrestricted current driver’s license, or other operator’s license, as required by law; and be eligible for coverage under CRITFC’s Motor Vehicle insurance policy. Upon request, CRITFC’s Motor Vehicle policy is available to applicants to review the required criteria.
